Hiking

Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge has 7 kilometers of beautiful rainforest trails where tourists explore a rich diversity of habitats, including primary and secondary forest, wetland, grassland, and mangrove swamp. There are trails which meander through the lowland to the beach. Others will take you into the highland where you will find magnificent views of the coast.

There are lots of opportunities to spot and learn about wildlife and the places where they live. The “Path of Discovery” guide will help you understand about the different types of habitat and learn interesting things about the rainforest. Informative signs are located at appropriate sites along the trails with interesting narrative and photos about flora, fauna and ecosystems.
There are different attractions inside the Refuge such as The Butterfly Garden which has a representative sample of local species of butterflies for you enjoyment. The Orchid Garden gets a close-up view of these riches from the rainforest canopy. The Birding Watching Tower located near of the Strangler Trail is a great place in the early morning or late afternoon to watch for birds and other wildlife around. The Baru Beach with 3 kilometers of pristine coastline protected by the Refuge offers the impressive mouth of Baru River and its mangrove swamp.
